Leila Hurst wins 2011 Jr World Title!!

Leila Hurst (HAW) was one of three surfers in the running for the ASP Women’s World Junior Title this morning, but was the last one standing after front-runner Joanne Defay (FRA) lost her Quarterfinal clash. Then Philippa Anderson (AUS) bowed out of the race when she finished runner-up in the event, as she needed to win the final to claim the crown.

“I never want to be in that position again,” Hurst said. “Watching a final and having no control over if I won the ASP World Title or if I lost. I was feeling so much pressure. I’m losing my mind right now, I never thought I had a chance to win this. I’ve only just started to do well in contests again after a run of bad results, so I had low self-esteem coming into this event. It’s feel great to see what winning feels like again.”

PRAIA DO DIABO, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Sunday, October 30, 2011) – Leila Hurst (HAW) has won the Arnette ASP Women’s World Junior presented by Quiksilver, topping Joanne Defay (FRA) at the backup location of Praia Do Diabo after a dominant performance on the final day of competition. Hurst was a standout throughout the event’s entirety and stormed her way through to the Final after earning a 9th place at the ASP World Junior Tour season opener, putting the Hawaiian back in contention for the elite ASP Women’s World Junior Crown.

“It was my first time in a World Junior Final and it might be my last year, so I’m so excited,” Hurst said. “I feel so blessed to be in Brazil. Everyone has been so nice and I’m just really excited. Australia is next, so who knows! Normally I get so stressed out at contests, but I just tried to relax and have fun.”

Hurst was equally efficient at both the main event location of Arpoador as well as Praia Do Diabo and was a consistent top-scorer throughout the entirety of Arnette ASP World Junior competition.

On October 22nd-23rd, Shea and Cory Lopez joined forces with other Daytona Beach heavies to put together a tow-at event, music festival, and all-around good time called Beach To Beer Fest at Sunglow Pier, just up the road from their respective Ponce Inlet residences. This weekend the Malibu Surf Association welcomed us to the 50th anniversary of their contest. The Duct Tape ran smoothly, except for waves, the waves were pretty bad, but some people thrive on small peelers. Alex Knost ended up prevailing in the end. Justin Quintal took second, Christian Wach in third and Harrison Roach took fourth. North Face provided tents and sleeping bags for everyone, we set up camp at Malibu Creek State Park. We had our awards dinner & Party at the Malibu Inn, complete with sounds by Tijuana Panthers & The Allah-Las, both bands killed it!

We just got home from Virginia Beach, and I'm sure it starting to get pretty gnar there from our girl Hurricane Irene. We hope that no destruction will happen, and that everyone will be alright. We had some good days before she came to town, hitting the pawn shops with Droid, Mat surfing with the boys over in design, sending Dylan into the booth with Stanfield. The Duct Tape Salinas went as smooth as it could. We started our trip a week before the start of the event in France and worked our way to Spain. We had great conditions for the contest, and it came down to a final heat of Justin Quintal (2X Duct Tape Champ), Al Knost (Defending Champ), Tyler Warren and Jared Mell. This event had some of the best surfing from any of the Duct Tapes, and not just the final, but the entire event. We are so stoked that we can put this event on for this small pod of elite surfers. The next Duct Tape will be held at MALIBU during the MSA Comp Sept 9-12, So until then, Stay tuned for updates.

Vans celebrated the launch of a collaboration with Southern California based fin company Captain Fin Co. on Thursday, July 7 at Vans by Thalia Surf Shop in Laguna Beach. Founded by surfer Mitch Abshere, Captain Fin fuses art, music and performance to create unique surfboard fins and is well-known for embracing and supporting the creativity of its riders. The event spotlighted Vans x Captain Fin Co. footwear and also featured artwork, photographs and surfboards created by Andrew Doheny and Alex Knost. The footwear collection includes Del Norte and Srpls Surf Siders and a Lanai sandal with colors and art by Doheny and Knost. North of 400 good friends came out for the party including Alex Knost, Andrew Doheny, Mitch Abshere, Tyler Warren, Manny Caro, Kameron Brown, Tanner Prairie, Chris Ballreich, Mike Lohrman, Troy Elmore, Ford Archbold and artist Andy Davis. John Florence and Pat Gudauskas have advanced to the quarters tomorrow morning at the Mr. Price Pro Prime event being held in Balito South Africa. The event has seen some of the best conditions imaginable, with both surfers getting some of the best rides they've ever experienced during a contest. Even with a loss in the quarters, the points gained will see Pat move up to around 20th on the One World Rankings. We are extremely excited to announce the addition of Dane Reynolds to the Vans Surf Team. Dane is one of the most exciting and unique surfers to date and brings a quiet sort of revolution with him. His approach is completely different to what's been done and his reach touches every facet of surfing. For decades Vans has been home for people choosing their own path and it’s a pleasure to be able to uphold that principle to this day and have Dane become a part of it.

The 26 year-old from Ventura, CA has already made his mark on the ASP World Tour with Top Ten final rankings in both 2009 (10th) and 2010 (4th) - just his second and third years on tour, but Dane is much more than a contest surfer. When a surfer is described as straddling the demands of the pro tour while simultaneously establishing himself as a top freesurf talent, perhaps no one reaches such heights in both worlds as the ultra-talented and creative Dane Reynolds.
