North Shore Underground Winner: Sion Milosky

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (February 11, 2011) — Vans and SURFING Magazine are pleased to announce that Sion Milosky (35) of Kalaheo, Kauai is the North Shore Underground (NSU) Surfer of the Year. Receiving $25,000 in travel funds from Vans, he will now have the opportunity to take his North Shore success worldwide. He plans to explore Australia, Chile, Mexico and Maverick's, as well as summertime swells in Tahiti to practice for Pipeline.

"I couldn't design a more deserving winner of the NSU project if I tried," said Editor Travis Ferre. "Sion Milosky epitomizes the spirit of the project through and through. I'm so excited to see what he does across the globe with the gracious 25k Vans has doled out."

The grassroots effort to promote unsung talented surfers in the islands began in October, 2010, with input from experts and friends, locals and pros. SURFING Magazine picked six surfers; Evan Valiere, Hank Gaskell, Marcus Hickman, Mikey Bruneau, Ola Eleogram and Sion Milosky and chronicled their progress during the winter season on the North Shore. The decision, based on all-around performance both in and out of contest jerseys, was clenched by Milosky's performance at Pipeline this season.

According to Milosky, "It was such a toss up. Hank and Evan, they surfed so well. I was just fortunate that I got so much exposure." When asked what he would like to do with the prize, he replied, "I just don't want to blow it all. I don't want to go on planned-out trips, then get there and not get waves. I work so hard for my money that I just don't like wasting it. So I'd love to be able to be on key swells, just be on the best waves at the best places."

As for the other five surfers, they couldn't be more happy for Milosky. Mikey Bruneau said, "Good for Si, he deserves it. He just went on some unreal waves this year. Echoing that sentiment, Ola Eleogram stated that, "Sion pretty much had to win it, he killed it harder than all of us."

Throughout the 3 months of this one-of-a-kind project, These men's real lives and real jobs were chronicled through surfingmagazine.com and vanstriplercrownofsurfing.com as the modern Country struggle that is the North Shore unfolded before the reader's eyes. They all consider themselves proud to be "underground" surfers and will continue to follow their passion while supplementing their chosen lifestyle through whatever work will allow them to skip out when the waves are good. What more could any waterman ask for? It's a lifestyle that very few are lucky enough to enjoy.

"I am really happy not only for Sion but the rest of the NSU Crew that participated," said SURFING Publisher, Tony Perez. "They all had a great winter and got heaps of exposure. Vans stepped up and now I can't wait to see what Sion has in store for us this coming year.
